Early Retinal Activity and Visual Circuit Development

چکیده
Does spontaneous retinal activity prior to vision play a role in the establishment of visual maps? In this issue of Neuron, two separate papers by Huberman et al. and Hooks and Chen demonstrate a role for early spontaneous retinal activity in the establishment of ocular dominance columns and synaptic refinement at retinogeniculate synapses.

Visual Circuit Development Requires Patterned Activity Mediated by Retinal Acetylcholine Receptors
The elaboration of nascent synaptic connections into highly ordered neural circuits is an integral feature of the developing vertebrate nervous system. In sensory systems, patterned spontaneous activity before the onset of sensation is thought to influence this process, but this conclusion remains controversial, largely due to the inherent difficulty recording neural activity in early developme...
متن کاملAn Evolutionarily Conserved Mechanism for Activity-Dependent Visual Circuit Development
Neural circuit development is an activity-dependent process. This activity can be spontaneous, such as the retinal waves that course across the mammalian embryonic retina, or it can be sensory-driven, such as the activation of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) by visual stimuli. Whichever the source, neural activity provides essential instruction to the developing circuit. Indeed, experimentally al...
متن کاملAn excitatory cortical feedback loop gates retinal wave transmission in rodent thalamus
Spontaneous retinal waves are critical for the development of receptive fields in visual thalamus (LGN) and cortex (VC). Despite a detailed understanding of the circuit specializations in retina that generate waves, whether central circuit specializations also exist to control their propagation through visual pathways of the brain is unknown. Here we identify a developmentally transient, cortic...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Features of Retinal Waves Instruct the Wiring of the Visual Circuitry
Coordinated spontaneous activity is present in different sensory systems during early stages of development. This activity is thought to play a critical role in the development of sensory representations before the maturation of sensory experience. In the visual system, the mechanisms by which spatiotemporal properties of retinal spontaneous activity, called retinal waves, drive developmental e...
متن کاملUncorrelated Neural Firing in Mouse Visual Cortex during Spontaneous Retinal Waves
Synchronous firing among the elements of forming circuits is critical for stabilization of synapses. Understanding the nature of these local network interactions during development can inform models of circuit formation. Within cortex, spontaneous activity changes throughout development. Unlike the adult, early spontaneous activity occurs in discontinuous population bursts separated by long sil...
